History of the Area & Metal Detecting Potential
The area surrounding Burras and Helston sits in one of the most historically rich landscapes in the South West, deeply tied to ancient trade routes, tin mining, and early settlement.

Bronze & Iron Age Wealth: The countryside around Helston and the nearby Wendron parish is crisscrossed by prehistoric tracks and ancient field systems. Cornwall was the primary tin producer of the ancient Western world, trading metal across Europe. Detectorists in this region frequently turn up Bronze Age socketed axes, palstaves, and Iron Age copper-alloy adornments.

Medieval Stannary Heritage: Helston was officially chartered as a Stannary Town in 1201 by King John, serving as a official hub where tin was brought, weighed, and taxed. Land around nearby settlements like Burras saw continuous foot traffic from medieval miners, merchants, and packhorse teams, making the surrounding fields prime ground for silver hammered coins (Short/Long Cross, Edwardian pennies), medieval belt mounts, strap ends, and trade jettons.
