What a fantastic day out in the field for the Devon, Cornwall & Dorset Detectorists! We gathered in West Cornwall for a brilliant day of detecting, blessed with great weather, even better company, and some incredible history saved from the Cornish soil.
To top off a great day of digging, our host landowners went above and beyond by putting on a fantastic BBQ for the group. There’s nothing quite like trading stories over hot food after a busy morning swinging the coils.
Highlight Finds of the Day
The West Cornwall fields certainly didn’t disappoint, giving up artifacts spanning thousands of years of local history. A few standout finds from the day include:
- 5 Roman Coins: Always a thrilling moment when a Roman coin pops out of the clod! To recover five in a single outing made the day extra special.
- Georgian & Victorian Bumper Crop: We recovered a massive haul of pre-decimal coppers and silver, including halfpennies, pennies, and a crisp 1940 Half Crown.
- Ornate Artifacts & Jewelry: Among the day’s relics were several vintage keys, horse harness mounts (including a striking heart-shaped lead piece), livery and trade buttons, a wax seal/watch fob, and a stunning piece of silver featuring detailed interlace scrollwork.
- Quirky Curiosities: Detecting always brings a few surprises—today’s included a vintage die-cast toy airplane (a classic piece of mid-century nostalgia) and even a modern Casio digital watch face keeping us on our toes!
